Baptism at St. Michael’s

Christian Baptism

“Baptism is a sacrament of beginnings, of newness, of grace, of a fresh start within history and in the depths of individual life.  It is the beginning of life in Christ and his people.  It is the sign of the new life which is always coming into being within the old but ever young Church.  It is the Christian Gospel in action, declaring and effecting the new age in Christ…Baptism is the sacramental link between the individual and the redemption which Christ has secured for all.”
                                                                           -- Daniel B. Stevick

Baptism is initiation into the Christian community, best experienced within the context of community.  The liturgy of Holy Baptism at St. Michael’s takes place within the main Communion service at four traditional times during the year:  the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord during Epiphany; Easter; Pentecost; and the feast of All Saints.  To further support the communal nature of this ritual, adult candidates and parents and guardians of child candidates are required to attend baptismal preparation classes held at St. Michael’s.

Baptism Preparation Classes

Baptism Classes for child candidates include the parents of all those preparing for the upcoming baptismal date and are offered at times when childcare is provided at the church, enabling parents to explore their questions with other parents and adults.  Godparents are invited and encouraged to attend if possible.

Topics to be covered are:

·  Meaning of baptism

·  Baptism in the early church

·  Baptism as a countercultural act

·  Baptismal vows and renunciations

·  Discipleship

·  Individual and family practices for adult and child Christian formation

·  Run-through and rehearsal of service
