Acolytes are lay persons that assist the celebrant in the worship
of God. At St. Michael's acolytes can serve as Torch Bearer, Crucifer,
Thurifer, Verger, Master of Ceremonies or Sub-deacon.
Torch Bearer: The torch bearer carries a candle (or torch)
in processions and at the reading of the gospel.
Crucifer: The crucifer carries the processional cross in processions
and at the reading of the gospel.
Thurifer: The thurifer carries the thurible and boat when
incense is used at the Eucharist or other celebrations.
Verger: The verger leads processions and carries a staff,
or "verge".
Master of Ceremonies: The M.C. directs the ceremonial at the
liturgy.
Subdeacon: The subdeacon assists the deacon and celebrant
at the altar.
