The interior decorations by Tiffany and others were added in stages
after the completion of the current church building in 1891.
Tiffany Studios decorated the apse beginning in 1895 with the installation of
seven stained glass windows in the apse depicting "St. Michael's Victory
in Heaven." The
windows were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and produced in his studios with
the assistance of artists Clara W.
Parrish, Edward P. Sperry, Louis J. Lederle and Joseph Lauber.
Tiffany also decorated the dome of the apse and installed the white
Vermont marble altar, reredos, credence, altar rail, pulpit and other
apse decorations. By 1920, the Tiffany decorations in the Chapel
of the Angels were completed, including two more stained glass windows
and the large mosaic behind the altar. These works represent one
of the largest Tiffany installations still intact in its original
setting.
The interior of the church was painted with brilliant colors in 1990 by Fine
Art Decoration of New York. For most of its first 100 years, the sanctuary had
been painted in neutral colors. In celebration of its centennial, the church
was repainted using colors in the palette of the Tiffany decorations.
